Friday, July 24th, 2009

The history of tie’s dates back to the 19th century when men used to wear kerchiefs around their necks as scarfs. These scarfs over the period of time have evolved to be the ties of today. What started off as a random accessory in early days , has now become an important element of the formal attire for men. Not to say, we also have bow type ties, festive ties and pocket squares which are accessorized with occasional wear .

Silk, is the most common fabric in which ties are available and these are mostly the luxury brands. The smooth texture and the impeccable appearance is what makes these more appealing. The variety of single and mixed colors in which these are available makes them the most chosen and can be matched with any type of shirts. Next in line of fondness would be the microfiber ties which are of a blended material and are more on the affordable range. Can You Live Without It?

First it was the tin can and string. How about the crank up phone? Remember rotary dial? Push button replaced was next on the scene. Cordless phones crept in allowing greater mobility. Did technology stop there? No. We asked for a car phone and we got one. Then the greatest discovery of them all – the cell phone. What an ingenious way to bring even the most brilliant man to an obsessive need.

Nary a person in today’s society is without this little gadget. How many of you have gone off on an errand or work and realized your grown-up “binky” has been left behind? Panic sets in when you can’t find your cell phone. All of you who have gone back at least once to get it, raise your hand. Be honest.

Go into any mall and you will find hordes of kiosks selling these indispensible items. Look around, cell phones are everywhere, whether clipped to a pocket, belt, or “glued” to an ear. There’s flip phones, pay as you go phones, even cell phones that double as a walkie-talkies. Who knows, fashion designers one day might create cell phone earrings or watches.

If you’re a female, you know the one thing we hate – shopping for bras. If you’ve ever gone bra shopping and come out unscathed you are one of the lucky ones. Bras are not a “one size fits all”, but the manufacturers would like us to think so. We say to ourselves “I bought a size 34B at the department store last time, so I’ll start there.”

In our endeavor to find the oh-so-perfect bra that we somehow think will conjure up Mr. Right, we immediately gravitate toward the colorful, lacy bras. Then our eyes spot the underwire (albeit the most uncomfortable), the 3-way, the 5-way, the padded bra for that little extra oomph, and so on and so forth, you get the idea. Elated that we’ve found a bra for every occasion, we head off to the fitting room to try them on. Too tight. Too loose. Breasts peek out the bottom of that one. This one squishes the “girls” like sausages in a casing. Disgusted but not dissuaded, we give the bras to the salesperson and leave empty handed.

Store after store, bra after bra it’s the same thing. But it doesn’t have to be. There is hope, ladies, really. There is a formula for getting the perfect fitting bra. First, you need to get a tape measure and figure out your band size. You get this by measuring around your rib cage directly under the breast. (You should write that number down because if you are like me, you may run out of fingers very quickly.) To that number, add 5”. (more…)
